During my usual work day morning routine I like to peruse the newspaper as I sip on my lame excuse for a mocha coffee. One morning last week I opened the Calgary Herald and lightly browsed what is happening. I turn the page and to my horror, there was a picture, larger than it needed to be, of some moron holding a dead mountain lion. My first reaction was to turn the page so I didn’t dwell on the photo. You see I recently lost my dog of 9 years in a tragic way. I am very sensitive type person to begin with, but the loss of my beautiful dog Sydney, has only heightened my reaction to this sort of thing.
But this image stayed with me and I eventually found myself reading the article. Absolute shock and dismay filled my mind together with… “exactly who does that?” Well, as it happens, Steven Ecklund does. In my opinion he is just some idiotic pseudo macho man on a hunting show, standing in the photo like he just conquered Mount Everest with a moronic grin on his face holding a limp mountain lion .
Some say it is primal and in our DNA to hunt. As human beings we are constantly reminded of our primal tendencies and instincts but we have evolved as a species thank goodness and learned to compensate. Otherwise we would cease to exist.
Steve Ecklund is a spineless coward. He used dogs to chase the animal until it is was utterly exhausted forcing it to run up a tree to hide to save it’s own life. He then gets out his stupid gun and shoots it out of the tree and has the audacity to stand there all proud of his catch. He is no sportsman as the article suggests because hunting is not a sport. To be a sport one must use physical strength, endurance, strategy and have a worthy opponent. It also must be fair and equal to all competing. If we apply this to hunting a mountain lion, there would be no guns, no dog chase, no traps, nothing. It would simply be man vs cat.
Let me know how that works out for you Steve Ecklund.
