Nail Salons and White Privileged Women

This past Sunday was one of those days where time was mine to determine. The only thing I really had to do  was to get my nails done at my favorite nail shop near my home. Being it was a beautiful sunny day I decided to ride my bike to the appointment which probably took me less time than it would have to take my car given the roundabout way of getting to the salon.

While sitting and going through the routine of having my manicure done, I looked around the room as I have done many times before and noticed the genre of people situated within the room. It isn’t the first time I have noticed the overwhelming majority of white Caucasian women of any age who frequent the salon, myself included. Over the past few visits, I have been paying attention to the clientele and notice there are very few minorities, and in particular of Asian descent, that visit this salon or any for that matter.

As I thought about it, perhaps this is the quintessential privilege of white women to have their nails, brows and facials done. And at my salon the specialists are all of Asian descent, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc, but women of Asian descent never frequent these salons.

I would really like to know why. Is there something I am not seeing? Is this pretentious? Are the beautiful Asian ladies who work in these salons paid well? Are they treated well?

Please enlighten me with your comments to help me understand.
